Vedanta Ltd has expanded its round-the-clock renewable energy capacity to over 1.03 GW. The company disclosed this update through power delivery agreements made in FY25. Reports suggest that it aims to reach a total of 2.5 GW of renewable energy capacity by the year 2030.

Emission Reduction

This capacity is expected to help the company mitigate more than 6 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually. The figure is calculated based on estimates of carbon absorption, roughly equal to what 350 million trees can absorb in a year. The current projects make use of wind, solar, and pump storage technologies.

Decarbonisation and Energy Strategy

Vedanta’s strategy to reduce its carbon footprint includes expanding renewable energy usage, switching to low-carbon fuels, improving energy and overall processes, and adopting carbon offset practices. The company has more than 350 environmental initiatives active across its business units.

Renewable Energy Capacity Updates

As of FY25, Vedanta has used 2.61 billion units of renewable energy. In its aluminium operations, the company has deployed lithium-ion forklifts and integrated LNG-powered trucks for logistics. It has also introduced battery-operated vehicles in underground zinc mining. The firm utilised 44,000 tonnes of biomass and supported the setup of Punjab’s largest torrefied bio-pellet manufacturing plant.

Its aluminium and zinc products carry Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). The aluminium business is also part of the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative, focused on responsible sourcing and sustainable manufacturing.

Additional Actions

Since 2021, the company has planted nearly 3 million trees. Three of its business units are certified as water positive, and three others have eliminated single-use plastics. A mass plantation drive was launched across states, including Rajasthan, Odisha, and Goa, on World Environment Day.
