In a progressive step towards sustainable development, the Uttar Pradesh government is preparing a green aviation fuel policy that aims to integrate agricultural with clean energy initiatives. The new policy is expected to support the state’s ambitions for energy independence while opening new avenues for farmers and investors.
The state is working on a policy to promote the use of biofuel in aviation, with discussions underway between the UP government, Indian Air Force, and the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
As per Business Standard reports, A senior official in the civil aviation department said, “A green aviation fuel policy is in the works, with active discussions involving the Air Force and the Civil Aviation Ministry.” The proposal aims to connect agriculture with the production of green fuel, particularly Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), from agricultural waste and residues.
With India aiming for net-zero emissions by 2070, states like UP are positioning themselves as contributors to this national goal.
The green aviation fuel policy will focus on creating a framework to promote biofuel research, attract investment, and establish public-private partnerships. This will involve collaboration with energy companies and research institutions to boost the production of biofuel, especially SAF.
The policy aligns with broader national strategies, such as the ethanol blending programme, which aims for 20% ethanol blending by 2025. UP is already a leading producer of ethanol, and the new policy could further strengthen its role in clean energy initiatives. The official highlighted that this policy would help utilise agricultural residues efficiently and contribute to lowering carbon emissions in the aviation sector.
