The Government of Telangana has announced a 1.944% increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) for employees and pensioners in the Power Department.
Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka declared the increase in DA during a press interaction, noting its positive impact on a broad section of the power sector workforce. The revision extends not only to active employees but also to pensioners and artisans, offering financial relief across multiple levels. This change will be implemented retrospectively from January of the current year.
This move is set to benefit 71,417 personnel across the State, including artisans. The revised DA, applicable from January, marks a shift from 14.074% to 16.018%. The hike is expected to place an additional monthly financial load of ₹11.193 crore on the State’s power utilities. This update comes amid rising power demand and strategic preparations to enhance generation capacity.
The rise in Dearness Allowance translates to a greater fiscal responsibility for the State. The ₹11.193 crore increase in monthly expenditure reflects the government’s commitment to supporting its workforce amidst inflationary pressures. Power utilities will bear this cost, which is expected to improve the morale and stability of the sector’s employees.
Mr Vikramarka emphasised the growing importance of electricity in industrial progress. He highlighted how the peak power demand, which was 15,000 MW in March 2023, has surged to 17,162 MW by March 2025. This 2,000 MW rise occurred under the present Congress-led administration. Despite the increase, uninterrupted and quality power supply has been maintained through coordinated efforts between the government and its employees.
The State is preparing to meet future challenges in power demand. Reports from central government agencies project that Telangana’s peak power demand may reach 26,299 MW by 2029–30 and 33,773 MW by 2034–35. In response, the State government has laid out plans to expand generation capacity and implement a Green Energy Policy. This policy aims to generate 20,000 MW of renewable energy by 2029–30.

The Deputy Chief Minister reiterated the government’s view of power employees as part of a larger family. He stressed the importance of their role in maintaining consistent service levels and called on them to stay prepared for emerging challenges in the sector. The DA hike is seen as part of the larger vision to ensure a well-supported and responsive energy workforce in Telangana.
