Siemens Ltd has received two orders worth a combined ₹773 crore from Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MAHA-METRO). The contracts are for the Nagpur Metro Rail Project Phase 2 and also include upgrades to parts of Phase 1. Both orders were officially announced recently.
The scope includes design, manufacturing, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of advanced signalling and telecommunication systems. Siemens will provide Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) technology and telecom infrastructure across the network. The execution timeline for the project is approximately 42 months.
The project spans a total distance of 43.8 kilometres and will cover 32 metro stations. It is part of a larger plan to expand metro connectivity across Nagpur. The contracts include work on both the new sections under Phase 2 and enhancements to the existing Phase 1 corridor.
CBTC is a signalling system that uses continuous communication between trains and trackside equipment. It allows operators to know the exact location of trains in real-time. This system replaces traditional fixed-block signalling and can support closer train intervals.
The project will also include telecommunication upgrades across the network. This covers internal communication systems, passenger information systems, and connectivity between trains and central control units. These components are intended to support the larger metro operation once Phase 2 is complete.
With the new systems, Nagpur Metro aims to improve train frequency and reduce wait times. The CBTC system is designed to support punctual operations and efficient train movement. Automatic Train Protection (ATP) features are also included to improve safety measures.
