Shyam Metalics and Energy Ltd. has announced its entry into the railway rolling stock sector with a new greenfield project in Kharagpur, West Bengal. The facility, led by its subsidiary Ramsarup Industries Ltd., is expected to start operations by March 2026. Initial Phase I will achieve a production rate of 2,400 wagons per annum (approximately 8 daily), with Phase II expanding this to 4,800 wagons annually. This move aligns with the "Make in India" and "Atmanirbhar Bharat" campaigns.
The plant will manufacture various types of wagons, such as Flat, Open, Hopper Covered, Box, Tank, and Specialised types, contributing to infrastructure development and regional employment.
The Kharagpur unit is designed with modern, sustainable practices, including rooftop solar panels, a residential colony for staff, and wellness amenities. A "Uni-Flow" production layout ensures smooth and efficient manufacturing processes. By utilising domestic equipment and locally sourced materials, the plant will enhance operational efficiency while promoting indigenous manufacturing capabilities.
This project is a part of Shyam Metalics’ 5-year capital investment plan, aiming to diversify beyond steel into high-growth mobility and infrastructure sectors. Headquartered in Kolkata, the company operates across West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Madhya Pradesh.
Known for its presence in the long steel, aluminium, ferro alloys, and sponge iron markets, Shyam Metalics was listed in 2021. The company continues to focus on delivering high-quality, value-added metal products while contributing to India’s industrial progress.
