Indian Railways has announced a large-scale project to install CCTV cameras in all passenger coaches and locomotives to improve safety. The Ministry of Railways approved installing cameras in 74,000 train coaches and 15,000 locomotives across the network.

Camera Placement with Privacy in Mind

Each passenger coach will get four CCTV cameras—two at each entrance door—to balance security with passenger privacy. Every locomotive will be equipped with six cameras. The cameras will be STQC certified, capable of operating in low-light conditions and at speeds up to 100 km/hr.

AI Integration and Advanced Monitoring

The Railways is also exploring Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to improve video capture and data management. This could allow smarter monitoring, better analytics, and faster response to security incidents.

Huge Market for Surveillance Companies

In total, the project will require around 3,86,000 CCTV cameras and an extensive supporting infrastructure, including:

  • Data storage systems
  • Command and control centers
  • Video analytics software
  • Cybersecurity tools
  • Maintenance and support services

The estimated project cost is between $1–1.5 billion. This has put companies like Siemens, Bosch, Honeywell, and Kernex Microsystems in the spotlight, as they may receive significant orders for equipment and services.

Conclusion

This massive CCTV deployment is set to transform safety standards on Indian trains while creating major business opportunities for leading surveillance and security firms. Passengers can expect better protection without compromising their privacy, as the Railways modernise their systems with cutting-edge technology.
