Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on June 20, 2025, released the first instalment to more than 53,600 beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY U) during an event held in Siwan, Bihar. The scheme is part of a government initiative to provide housing support to economically weaker sections in urban areas.

Details of the Disbursement

The instalment is part of the PMAY-U scheme’s ongoing rollout across various states. Multiple infrastructure and development projects were also inaugurated during the event or had their foundation stones laid. The government stated that these steps are in line with previous commitments to support urban development and housing.

About the Scheme

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana was launched to provide affordable pucca homes to people in need across both rural and urban India. PMAY is divided into two parts:

  • PMAY-U (Urban) for cities and towns
  • PMAY-G (Gramin) for rural regions

Eligibility: PMAY Urban

To be eligible for PMAY-U, applicants must not own a pucca house anywhere in India. They must fall into one of the following income groups:

  • Economically Weaker Section (EWS): Annual income up to ₹3 lakh
  • Lower Income Group (LIG): ₹3 lakh to ₹6 lakh
  • Middle Income Group-I (MIG-I): ₹6 lakh to ₹9 lakh

Other eligible categories include slum dwellers, street vendors, daily wage earners, migrant workers, rickshaw pullers, and women from disadvantaged backgrounds, including SC, ST, OBC, and minority groups.

Eligibility: PMAY Gramin

Households listed in the Socio-Economic and Caste Census (SECC) that either do not own a house or live in kutcha homes with up to two rooms are eligible. Households with pucca homes, vehicles, or taxable assets are excluded.

Application Process

For PMAY-U:

  • Visit pmaymis.gov.in
  • Select ‘Apply for PMAY-U 2.0’
  • Verify Aadhaar via OTP
  • Fill and submit the application

For PMAY-G:

  • Visit pmayg.nic.in
  • Fill in personal details, verify the SECC list, and submit through the local authorities
