The Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) is expecting a sharp rise in candidate selections and internship acceptances in the second round of the PM Internship Scheme (PMIS) pilot phase, as per news reports. The increase is expected due to key changes made to address the challenges faced in the first round.

What Changes Were Made to the PM Internship Scheme?

According to officials, many candidates in the first round withdrew or were disqualified due to various issues—such as reluctance to relocate, lack of clarity about eligibility, and family income exceeding the limit. Despite over 621,000 applications, only 28,141 candidates joined the internship.

To fix this, the MCA made the following key updates:

  1. Geo-tagging of internship positions: Candidates can now apply for internships closer to their hometowns, reducing the need for relocation.
  2. Better communication and awareness: The ministry used social media campaigns to educate candidates about the scheme and eligibility.
  3. Feedback from companies: MCA also collected input from participating firms to fine-tune the process and improve alignment with industry needs.
  4. As per news reports, these improvements will increase acceptance rates and lead to better matching between students and companies.

Impact of the Updates

With these changes, students are expected to feel more comfortable applying and more likely to accept offers. The relocation barrier, which was a major reason for dropouts in Round 1, has been significantly reduced. Improved awareness is also likely to lower the number of ineligible applicants.

Current Status of PM Internship Scheme and Targets

The first round was launched in December 2024 with over 127,000 internship offers. Companies offered positions to 60,866 students, and interviews for Round 2 will continue till May 10.

The government aims to provide 1.25 lakh internships in FY25 across sectors like banking, defence, aviation, chemicals, and energy. However, experts note that the low ₹5,000 monthly stipend and limited involvement of the top 500 companies remain key concerns.

Conclusion

The PM Internship Scheme’s latest changes are aimed at making it more accessible and effective. If successful, it could become a major platform for skill-building and industry exposure for India’s youth.
