OpenAI, in collaboration with IndiaAI, A mission under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has officially launched OpenAI Academy India on 6 June 2025. This marks OpenAI’s first international expansion of its AI education platform. The academy aims to bring AI learning to a broader audience and enhance India’s growing tech ecosystem.

Nationwide AI Upskilling Through OpenAI Academy

The academy is designed to make AI education and tools more accessible across India, leveraging the country's rapidly expanding developer base, strong digital infrastructure, and startup ecosystem. As part of the effort, OpenAI will host regular webinars and in-person workshops in 6 major Indian cities. It will also support the ‘future skills’ initiative by providing AI training to students, developers, teachers, civil servants, nonprofit leaders, and small business owners. Additionally, OpenAI will grant up to $100,000 worth of API credits to 50 startups or fellows approved under the IndiaAI Mission.

"This is a significant step towards advancing our shared goal of democratising access to knowledge and technology... We believe the latest AI frameworks and tools must be made widely accessible so that our startups, developers, and researchers can build faster, better, and at scale," said IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

Multilingual Access and Government Integration

OpenAI Academy India will offer a blended learning approach, initially in English and Hindi, with plans to expand to at least four more regional languages. Its content will be integrated into the FutureSkills platform as well as the iGOT Karmayogi platform, which is intended to enhance the capabilities of government employees.

The academy also aims to train 100,000 teachers in using generative AI tools effectively. Hackathons will be organised across seven Indian states, engaging around 25,000 students in community-based AI innovation. Jason Kwon, Chief Strategy Officer at OpenAI, added, "We're proud to partner with IndiaAI to launch OpenAI Academy India and help more people gain the confidence and skills to use AI meaningfully in their work, communities, and lives."
