Starting July 1, 2025, booking Tatkal train tickets through IRCTC will require Aadhaar authentication. This move by the Ministry of Railways is aimed at enhancing transparency, eliminating misuse, and simplifying emergency travel for genuine passengers.

The Aadhaar-linked system ensures that ticket bookings are reserved by actual users and not hijacked by unauthorised agents or bots.

New Tatkal Booking Rules Effective from July 1, 2025

Several key changes will come into effect starting July 1:

  • Only Aadhaar-linked IRCTC accounts will be allowed to book Tatkal tickets

  • Users must complete Aadhaar verification through a one-time password sent to their Aadhaar-linked mobile number

  • From 15 July 2025, every Tatkal booking will require an additional Aadhaar-based OTP authentication step to confirm the identity of the account holder

These steps are designed to prevent abuse of the booking system and to verify that the person making the booking is indeed the rightful user of the account.

What You Need Before Linking Aadhaar with IRCTC?

To link Aadhaar with your IRCTC account, you will need the following:

  • An active IRCTC user account

  • Your 12-digit Aadhaar number or a valid Virtual ID

  • Access to the mobile number registered with your Aadhaar to receive the one-time password

Steps to Link Aadhaar with Your IRCTC Account

Here is a simple and clear process to link your Aadhaar with your IRCTC account:

  1. Visit the official IRCTC website and log in using your account credentials

  2. Go to 'My Account' and select 'Authenticate User'

  3. Enter your Aadhaar number or Virtual ID

  4. Click on 'Verify Details'

  5. You will receive a one-time password on your Aadhaar-linked mobile number

  6. Enter the password and provide consent to proceed

  7. A success message will confirm the Aadhaar has been linked successfully

Once this is completed, your IRCTC account will be eligible for Tatkal ticket bookings under the new rules.

How to Aadhaar-Verify Passengers in the IRCTC Master List?

To save time during Tatkal bookings, you can pre-verify frequent passengers by adding them to your IRCTC Master List. Here’s how:

  1. Log in to your IRCTC account and go to My Profile > Master List

  2. Add the passenger’s name, date of birth, and gender exactly as they appear on the Aadhaar card

  3. Select 'Aadhaar Card' as the ID proof and enter the Aadhaar number

  4. Click 'Submit'. The status will appear as Pending

  5. Use the 'Check pending Aadhaar verification' option to track verification status

  6. Once verified, the details will be auto-filled during future bookings

Keeping this list updated will reduce booking time and increase chances during peak demand periods.

Why Aadhaar Has Been Made Mandatory for Tatkal Booking

The Ministry of Railways has announced a new mandate that requires users to link their Aadhaar with their IRCTC accounts in order to book Tatkal tickets online. This step is intended to:

  • Curb misuse of the Tatkal quota by unauthorised agents and automated scripts

  • Ensure genuine last-minute travellers get equitable access

  • Increase accountability and security in online ticket booking

  • Promote transparency and digital governance in line with the Digital India initiative

Purpose Behind These Changes

The Indian Railways introduced these rules with several objectives:

  • To remove unfair advantages enjoyed by touts and bots

  • To prioritise real passengers in need of emergency travel

  • To align railway operations with e-governance practices and digital security standards

  • To strengthen the integrity of online services used by millions daily

Conclusion

Officials from the Ministry have stated that this change is part of a broader national effort to integrate Aadhaar as a secure identity system across essential public services.

These new measures are designed to make the Tatkal system more efficient and fair. Linking Aadhaar with your IRCTC account not only ensures compliance but also enhances booking security and user authenticity.
