In a landmark move towards ethical digital commerce, 26 major e-commerce platforms have voluntarily declared that they are in compliance with the 2023 guidelines aimed at ending dark patterns—deceptive user interface tactics that manipulate consumers into unintended actions.
Voluntary Compliance Marks New Chapter in Online Consumer Protection
On November 20, 2025, 26 leading Indian e-commerce platforms submitted self-declaration letters to the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), confirming they have carried out internal or third-party audits to strip their platforms of dark patterns. These include interface design practices such as false urgency, basket sneaking, hidden advertising, and more, banned under the Guidelines for Prevention and Regulation of Dark Patterns, 2023.
Among the platforms ensuring compliance are Flipkart, Myntra, MakeMyTrip, Zepto, Swiggy, Zomato, BigBasket, and Meesho, covering industries from travel to grocery, healthcare, apparel, and digital services.
Scope of Dark Patterns and Regulatory Framework
The CCPA guidelines, issued under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, prohibit 13 commonly seen forms of manipulative practices such as trick wording, forced action, subscription traps, and disguised advertisements. The advisory issued on June 5, 2025, required all platforms to complete mandatory self-audits within 3 months, ensuring elements like transparency, explicit consent, and fair UI design.
The CCPA praised the self-regulation as best practice and called upon all remaining digital platforms, app developers, and service providers to replicate this approach. These declarations are made available publicly via both the respective company websites and the CCPA portal for consumer scrutiny and to establish public trust.

Efforts to boost digital literacy among consumers are ongoing through the National Consumer Helpline, social media campaigns, and educational videos. The CCPA continues to monitor violations actively and states that enforcement action will be taken against platforms failing to comply.
The commitment by 26 e-commerce platforms to remove dark patterns and adopt transparent practices reflects a growing trend towards ethical digital interactions. It signifies a vital step in building a fair and honest consumer ecosystem in India’s expanding online marketplace.
