After two years leading X (formerly known as Twitter), Linda Yaccarino has announced her departure as CEO, bringing an end to a significant period for the Elon Musk-owned social media platform.
In a heartfelt message posted on X, Yaccarino reflected on her time at the company as “the opportunity of a lifetime.” She expressed gratitude to Musk for entrusting her with what she described as an “extraordinary mission” — to safeguard free speech, steer the company through challenging waters, and help transform X into the ambitious vision of an “Everything App.”
Yaccarino, a seasoned advertising executive and longtime NBCUniversal leader, joined X in June 2023 following Musk’s acquisition and rebranding of Twitter. Her appointment was widely seen as a strategic move to stabilise the platform’s advertising revenue, which had suffered amidst Musk’s controversial content moderation policies.
During her tenure, Yaccarino concentrated on restoring advertiser trust and expanding the platform’s capabilities. Notable initiatives under her leadership included the rollout of Community Notes, a crowdsourced fact-checking tool, and the upcoming launch of X Money, a new financial services offering designed to deepen user engagement.
She highlighted the progress made in prioritizing user safety — particularly for younger audiences — alongside rebuilding confidence among advertisers. “The historic business turnaround we have achieved together has been truly remarkable,” she noted.
Yaccarino also underscored X’s evolving role as a global “digital town square” and extended thanks to the platform’s team, users, and partners for their ongoing support.
Her exit coincides with the platform’s next phase, centered around Musk’s AI venture, xAI, which is expected to play a growing role in shaping X’s future.
While Yaccarino did not reveal her next steps, she assured the community of her continued support: “I’ll be cheering you all on as you continue to change the world. As always, I’ll see you on X.”

Elon Musk recruited Yaccarino in 2023 to mend fractured relationships with advertisers and bring stability to the social media giant’s business model.
Throughout her leadership, Yaccarino focused on revitalizing ad revenue, introducing new features like Community Notes, and developing X Money. Her tenure was marked by a series of advertiser departures, public debates around content moderation, and efforts to reshape X into a multifunctional platform beyond traditional social media.
Prior to joining X, Yaccarino had an extensive career at NBCUniversal, where she served as Chairman of Global Advertising and Partnerships for over 11 years. She played a crucial role as the strategic and operational connector across the company’s networks, streaming platforms, distribution deals, and client relationships.
