In a move that could reshape high-speed internet access in India, Reliance Jio has approached the Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC) for permission to use the 26 GHz spectrum band for WiFi services, as per Economic Times news report.
This comes after the telecom giant acquired spectrum in this band during the 2022 5G auction, where Jio made the highest bid of ₹88,078 crore.
The 26 GHz band is part of the millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum, which is known for:
While it is traditionally earmarked for 5G services, Jio wants to repurpose it for WiFi, which requires explicit clearance from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).
According to the Notice Inviting Application (NIA) for the 2022 auction:
This ensures that any new technology rollout aligns with international standards like those from ITU or TEC.
If approved, Jio's use of 26 GHz spectrum for WiFi could lead to:
Jio’s strategy indicates how telecom operators are innovating to maximise their spectrum investments. It could set a precedent for other telcos seeking flexibility in spectrum use. If the TEC grants approval, India could see a significant expansion in high-capacity wireless access points beyond traditional mobile networks.

Jio’s proposal to repurpose 26 GHz spectrum for WiFi highlights a pivotal shift in how telecom assets may be leveraged in the future. If approved, it could open the door for faster, more efficient wireless connectivity across India and set a benchmark for spectrum innovation.
As the lines between mobile networks and fixed wireless services blur, regulatory clarity and forward-looking policies will be key to unlocking the full potential of 5G-era infrastructure.
