Indian Railways has taken a major step to combat online ticketing malpractice by deactivating 2.5 crore IRCTC user IDs. The move primarily targets suspicious accounts and reinforces upcoming reforms like Aadhaar-based authentication for Tatkal bookings.
In an effort to identify and eliminate fraud, the IRCTC used sophisticated data analytics to detect unusual booking behaviours across millions of accounts. As a result, 2.5 crore accounts were found to be either inactive or involved in suspicious activity, leading to their deactivation. This action aims to reduce manipulation of the online ticketing system by unauthorised agents and automated bots.
Starting July 1, only Aadhaar-authenticated users will be able to book Tatkal tickets on the IRCTC platform. This measure seeks to improve transparency and prevent mass ticket hoarding. Additionally, agents have been barred from booking Tatkal tickets in the first 30 minutes of reservation opening to prioritise genuine passengers.
In response to Member of Parliament A D Singh, the Railway Ministry confirmed the deactivation and reassured the public about plans to overhaul digital services. The ministry observed that ticket demand sharply rises on specific routes and times, causing slots to fill within minutes. This move ensures better allocation and access to tickets for regular passengers.

Indian Railways has also introduced schemes such as VIKALP and upgradation, allowing waitlisted passengers to get confirmed seats in alternate trains or higher classes. Around 89% of all ticket bookings are now digital, and PRS counters also accept digital payments to broaden accessibility.
On July 25, 2025, IRCTC share price opened at ₹757.00 on NSE, below the previous close of ₹757.15. During the day, it surged to ₹757.05 and dipped to ₹742.10. The stock closed at ₹746.25 by the end of the day. The stock registered a moderate decline of 1.44%.
Over the past week, it has declined by 3.14%, over the past month, it has declined by 4.97%, and over the past 3 months, it has declined by 0.74%.
By deactivating 2.5 crore user IDs and enforcing Aadhaar-based Tatkal bookings, Indian Railways aims to make online reservations more secure, transparent, and equitable. Passengers are encouraged to review their IRCTC accounts and update necessary information to avoid disruption in services.
