India Post has launched 2 new digital services, Know Your DIGIPIN and Know Your PIN Code, with plans to upgrade and streamline India’s postal and address mapping system. The launch took place on May 27, 2025, as part of the implementation of the National Geospatial Policy 2022.

DIGIPIN by India Post

DIGIPIN stands for Digital Postal Index Number. It is a geo-coded address system that breaks the country into grids of 4 metres by 4 metres. Each grid is assigned a unique 10-character alphanumeric code based on latitude and longitude.

This system was developed in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and ISRO’s National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC). It is to support accurate location identification, especially in remote and rural areas where addresses can be ambiguous or unclear.

How It Works

The Know Your DIGIPIN portal allows users to retrieve their DIGIPIN by entering coordinates or using GPS. The tool is open-source, and the technical documentation and source code are available on GitHub. This allows developers and organisations to use the system in their own applications.

DIGIPIN is intended to work alongside existing addresses, providing an added layer of geographic accuracy for logistics, emergency services, and other systems that require precise mapping.

Updates to the PIN Code System

The traditional 6-digit PIN Code system has also been updated. Over 1.5 lakh PIN Code areas have been geo-fenced by India Post. Through the Know Your PIN Code portal, users can identify the correct PIN Code based on their exact location.

This data has been made publicly accessible via the Open Government Data Platform. Users can also provide feedback through the portal to help improve mapping accuracy.

Conclusion

The 2 platforms aim to improve the accuracy of postal data and simplify location-based services, particularly in regions where physical addresses are inconsistent or incomplete.
