The Income Tax Department has started a big operation against some chartered accountants and tax agents who were helping people claim fake tax deductions and refunds. According to the Finance Ministry, many of these professionals promised higher refunds and took big commissions in return.
Investigators found that these agents were filing tax returns showing false deductions like HRA, 80C, 80D, and home loan interest. They told taxpayers they would get large refunds if the department didn’t notice. In return, the agents charged a percentage as commission. In many cases, these people posed as chartered accountants without any official registration.
The department used AI tools, data analytics, and third-party information to trace these activities. Search operations have already been conducted at over 150 locations across different states. Officials said many taxpayers didn’t have any proof for their claims.
After receiving notices, around 40,000 taxpayers have updated their returns in the past 4 months, giving up bogus claims worth ₹1,045 crore. However, many people are still holding out, possibly influenced by these fake consultants.
Authorities have found that employees from government departments, banks, railways, and private companies were part of this fraud.
The department has warned that if taxpayers do not correct these false claims, they could face heavy penalties, blocked refunds, prosecution, and even criminal charges.
