Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), under the guidance of NHAI, brought together stakeholders from the FinTech space for an insightful workshop in New Delhi.
The central focus was to explore innovative, non-toll applications of the FASTag system while addressing regulatory, security, and grievance challenges for faster ecosystem growth.
Originally introduced as an electronic toll collection tool, FASTag has grown significantly in adoption. The workshop provided a platform to discuss expanding its reach into new areas of convenience and utility. These included parking fee payments, fuel transactions, insurance integration, and smart mobility services. Leveraging UPI and digital wallets, such expansions aim to streamline end-to-end road travel for users across India.
The session witnessed a strong ministerial and administrative presence. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, Minister of State Ajay Tamta, MoRTH secretary V Umashankar, DFS secretary M Nagaraju, and RBI ED P Vasudevan were part of the event alongside FinTech company representatives.
Discussions revolved around policy frameworks, comprehensive grievance redressal mechanisms, and robust data security alignments that are essential for scaling the system sustainably.

With the push towards digital India, integrating FASTag beyond toll plazas serves a dual purpose: facilitating smoother consumer interactions and reducing friction in backend processing for service providers. The envisioned FASTag-driven ecosystem includes features like digitised highway fuel payments, intelligent transport networks, and secure real-time tracking of vehicles for logistics companies all anchored on a single tag.
Participation from top FinTech firms added a pragmatic perspective to the discussions. These players offered insights into how APIs, data interoperability, and payment gateways could be adapted for the efficient deployment of FASTag in transit-related solutions. The goal is to establish FASTag as a universal digital mobility identifier in India’s growing smart infrastructure.
IHMCL’s workshop marks a strategic step towards enhancing India’s mobility infrastructure. By involving FinTech innovators and central regulatory authorities, the plan is to evolve FASTag into an all-in-one digital platform across transport and logistics domains. This collaboration highlights the government’s commitment to digitally empowering the National Highway system and improving commuter experiences.
