The Goa government has unveiled the AI Mission 2027, an ambitious initiative aimed at developing a robust and inclusive Artificial Intelligence ecosystem in the state, as per news reports. Inspired by the Central Government’s India AI Mission, this programme seeks to drive innovation, empower citizens, and enhance governance through the adoption of AI.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and IT Minister Rohan Khaunte are actively engaging stakeholders to align the mission with the national AI vision. The mission represents a shift from Goa's traditional image to a forward-looking tech hub, positioning the state on the digital innovation map.

Key Components: Infrastructure, Education, and Language Preservation

One of the main areas of focus under this mission is the establishment of Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) to increase computational capabilities. The state also plans to introduce AI Coaches, utilise government data for developing relevant datasets, and encourage the ethical use of AI.

The creation of a dedicated Goa AI Policy and an AI Advisory Council has been initiated to guide and monitor the rollout. Additionally, Goa will invest in AI Labs and integrate AI education across schools and universities. A unique aspect of the initiative includes the development of a Konkani Large Language Model (LLM) to help preserve and promote the local language and cultural identity through AI.

Stakeholder Collaboration and Future Readiness

The mission is structured around 4 foundational pillars: skilling, startups and businesses, capital, and government and infrastructure. The focus will be on equipping the Goan population with AI skills, ensuring both students and working professionals are prepared not just to use AI, but to innovate with it.

According to the IT department, almost 350 IT companies and startups are actively operating in Goa. Collaboration among academia, industry, and government is central to building both physical and digital infrastructure for cutting-edge AI research and development.
