As per an Economic Times report, Foxconn has started importing parts for Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 into India. Customs records show that about 10% of the components shipped from China in June were meant for the iPhone 17. The shipments include display assemblies, cover glass, mechanical housings, and integrated rear camera modules.
The lower volume of imports shows these parts are intended for trial production. As per reports, trial assembly of the iPhone 17 is expected to begin this month. Mass production is planned to start in August 2025, ahead of the model’s global launch in September 2025.
Most of the shipments received in June 2025 were for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 16. These older models are expected to see higher demand in India during the festive season. Foxconn is reportedly ramping up supplies for these variants accordingly.
Apple plans to manufacture the iPhone 17 in both India and China from day one. This follows its recent efforts to expand India’s role in global iPhone production. This comes as Apple continues to shift its supply chain outside China.
Data from S&P Global Market Intelligence shows a 219% year-on-year increase in iPhone exports from India to the US as of March. Apple reportedly plans to fully source iPhones for the US market from India by 2026, amid ongoing trade tensions.

In 2024, India was included in Apple’s new product introduction (NPI) process for the iPhone 16 base models. This marked the first time NPI was not exclusive to China. Apple is expected to follow a similar approach for the iPhone 17.
As per news reports, the exit of trained Chinese engineers from Foxconn’s India units may create challenges. These engineers are typically involved in precision assembly, which is critical in the early stages of new product manufacturing.
Foxconn’s initial iPhone 17 component imports suggest trial production is underway in India. Broader manufacturing and export plans remain closely linked to Apple’s larger supply chain shift.
