Dream Sports, the parent company of India's fantasy sports platform Dream11, has announced a $50 million investment in cricket content platform Cricbuzz and North American broadcaster Willow TV. This move marks a significant step in the company’s broader strategy to enhance the sports fan experience across platforms.

The investment will secure a minority stake in Cricbuzz and Willow TV, which are owned by Times Internet. The collaboration aims to bring innovation to cricket fans by integrating real-time insights, artificial intelligence-driven features, and commerce-related tools into their digital experiences.

Strengthening Long-Standing Partnerships

Dream Sports and Cricbuzz have enjoyed a collaborative relationship for over a decade. With this investment, the partnership is set to evolve further, focusing on enriching content delivery and fan interactivity.

Harsh Jain, co-founder of Dream Sports, emphasised the vision to "Make Sports Better" for Indian fans and highlighted the new offerings fans can anticipate, ranging from interactive live streams to integrated shopping experiences, all intended to bring fans closer to the sport and to each other.

Enhancing Fan Experiences With AI and Real-Time Engagement

As part of this strategic alliance, Dream Sports and Times Internet plan to build more immersive experiences around live cricket content. These enhancements will include:

  • AI-based match predictions
  • Customised personalisation
  • Integrated commerce
  • Real-time data and statistics

Willow TV’s Role in North American Cricket Broadcasting

Willow TV plays a pivotal role in promoting cricket in North America. The broadcaster holds exclusive media rights for all International Cricket Council (ICC) events in the US and Canada through the end of 2027. This includes major global tournaments such as the Men’s and Women’s World Cups, as well as the Under-19 editions.

This long-term broadcasting agreement, signed in March 2023, ensures Willow TV remains a key gateway for cricket fans across North America, providing Dream Sports with a valuable avenue to tap into an international audience.

Dream Sports’ Expanding Portfolio and Recent Moves

Dream Sports operates several brands in the sports-tech ecosystem beyond Dream11, including:

  • FanCode: A sports content and commerce platform
  • DreamSetGo: A sports travel and experiences platform
  • Dream Game Studios: A mobile game development division
  • Sixer: A sports-based virtual trading platform

The company, which now has 250 million users, has been steadily expanding its reach across digital and experiential verticals.

In a related move just last week, Dream Sports became part of the ownership group of Salford City Football Club, a fourth-division English football team. The group includes notable names such as David Beckham and Gary Neville, and the investment signals Dream Sports' broader global sporting ambitions.

Shifting Base Back to India

In March, Dream Sports shifted its domicile from Delaware, United States, back to India. This aligns with a trend among Indian startups aiming to re-establish their base in their country of origin, possibly to leverage regulatory or operational advantages in the domestic market.

Founded in 2008 by Harsh Jain and Bhavit Sheth, Dream Sports was last valued at $8 billion after securing $840 million in a funding round in 2021. That round included participation from global investors such as Tiger Global, TPG, Falcon Edge, and DST Global.
