The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has inaugurated a new Quantum Technology Research Centre to boost India’s indigenous quantum capabilities. This centre aims to advance research and development in quantum technologies specifically for defence and strategic applications. By focusing on cutting-edge quantum science, DRDO seeks to strengthen India’s position in secure communications, sensing, and other critical areas important for national security.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) officially inaugurated the Quantum Technology Research Centre (QTRC) at Metcalfe House, Delhi. The inauguration was led by Dr Samir V Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO. This initiative marks a significant step towards strengthening India’s indigenous quantum technology capabilities, particularly for strategic and defence use.
The Quantum Technology Research Centre is equipped with advanced experimental set-ups aimed at accelerating research in critical quantum domains. Notable capabilities include:
These cutting-edge platforms are essential to enable ultra-secure communication and safeguard national security in the post-quantum era. The Scientific Analysis Group (SAG) within DRDO is spearheading these efforts.

Led by the Solid State Physics Laboratory (SSPL), QTRC also emphasises foundational quantum technologies, including:
These developments aim to enhance India’s capabilities in navigation, sensing, and materials science relevant to defence and strategic sectors.
DRDO continues to be at the forefront of India’s quantum technology mission, leading projects in quantum sensing, secure communications, and post-quantum cryptography. As a key participant in the National Quantum Mission, the organisation is committed to promoting indigenous innovation and ensuring sovereign control over critical quantum technologies.
The inauguration ceremony witnessed the presence of several dignitaries including Smt Suma Varughese, Director General for Micro Electronic Devices, Computational Systems and Cyber Systems, whose vision was vital in conceptualising the QTRC. Also present were Dr Manu Korulla, DG (Resource & Management), along with directors of SSPL and SAG, senior scientists, and other notable guests.
The establishment of the Quantum Technology Research Centre reinforces India’s resolve to build home-grown quantum technology expertise, essential for advancing national security and strategic defence capabilities in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
