The Nifty India Defence Index has taken centre stage in May, rising nearly 31% in a month and over 8% in just a week. The rally has pushed the index past 8,700, grabbing attention amid otherwise stable market conditions.

Operation Sindoor: Trigger for the Defence Boom

The rally began on May 7, when Operation Sindoor—India’s strong military response to the Pahalgam attack—highlighted the strategic importance of the defence sector. The mission boosted investor sentiment and increased focus on companies supplying equipment to the armed forces. Since then, the index has surged from 6,940 to over 8,700 in just 15 trading sessions.

On May 27, the Nifty Defence Index rose 1.86% intraday to 8,713.15. Leading stocks included:
