In a significant step towards advancing India's capabilities in quantum-secure communication, the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), a leading telecom R&D institution under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Synergy Quantum India Private Limited.
Synergy Quantum is a pioneering company in the quantum technology sector, and this partnership aims to push the boundaries of quantum technology in India.
The MoU formalises the collaboration between C-DOT and Synergy Quantum in the development of Drone-based Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) systems. These systems will leverage the decoy-based BB84 protocol with polarisation encoding, which is designed to enhance secure communication systems.
The targeted development of this technology will reach a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 6 or higher, indicating a mature stage of technological development.
This collaboration is in line with the national vision of strengthening indigenous research and innovation under the "Atmanirbhar Bharat" initiative, a programme that seeks to boost self-reliance in various technological domains.
The collaboration will focus on the development of quantum communications technologies that are optimised for drone-based deployment. By utilising drone technology, the project seeks to bring quantum-safe communications to new heights, enabling secure communication in hard-to-reach areas.
In addition to technological development, both organisations will jointly co-create research proposals, apply for national and international grants, and share research outcomes through scholarly publications and white papers. This initiative is expected to make significant contributions to the growing field of quantum communications.
As part of their efforts to accelerate the development of quantum technologies, C-DOT and Synergy Quantum will also engage in educational and outreach activities.
This includes delivering expert talks, conducting short courses, and organising symposia, conferences, and meetings on timely research themes. These initiatives aim to disseminate knowledge and foster further innovation in the quantum communications space.

Dr. Rajkumar Upadhyay, CEO of C-DOT, highlighted the importance of public R&D collaboration with private innovation in shaping a secure and self-reliant digital future for India. He stated, "Quantum technologies hold immense promise for next-generation secure communications, and this collaboration with Synergy Quantum reflects our shared vision of accelerating indigenous capabilities in this critical domain."
On the other hand, Mr. Jay Oberoi, Founder & CEO of Synergy Quantum India, expressed his excitement about the potential of the partnership, stating, "This partnership has the potential to position India as a global leader in drone-based quantum secure communications."
The agreement was signed in a ceremony attended by key figures from both organisations. The partnership is set to revolutionise secure data transmission for crucial applications such as defence, emergency response, critical infrastructure, and government communications. This technological leap will position India as a global player in the rapidly evolving field of quantum communications.
The collaboration between C-DOT and Synergy Quantum signifies an important milestone in India's journey towards becoming a global leader in quantum technology, with applications that extend far beyond the telecom sector.
