In a significant development for residents living in unsafe structures, the Maharashtra government has introduced a monthly rent assistance. This initiative is aimed at easing the redevelopment of old and dilapidated buildings in the suburban regions of Mumbai.
In a major relief for residents staying in unsafe and ageing buildings, the Maharashtra government has announced a monthly rent support scheme. This move is intended to accelerate the redevelopment of old and dilapidated structures, particularly across the suburban areas of Mumbai.
The decision was disclosed by Minister Ashish Shelar during a Mumbai Suburban District Planning Committee meeting held at Chetana College in Bandra.

The committee approved a budget allocation of ₹1,088 crore for various district development projects. A major concern addressed during the session was the deteriorating condition of numerous ageing buildings across Mumbai's suburbs. These structures pose a serious threat to the safety of their inhabitants and need immediate attention for redevelopment.
To tackle potential landslides during the monsoon season, the state has decided to install mass nets in areas identified as vulnerable. The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) will manage installations where retaining walls are below 9 metres. Structures with taller walls will be overseen by the Public Works Department to ensure structural safety during heavy rainfall.
The committee highlighted the necessity of developing infrastructure in tribal hamlets. Minister Shelar emphasised the complete utilisation of funds under tribal development schemes. A state-directed population survey of tribal communities will help enable accurate planning. A development blueprint will be created to ensure proper access to roads, electricity, clean water, and sanitation in these regions.
A resolution was passed to exclude the Ketkipada area from the recently declared extended forest zone of Sanjay Gandhi National Park. This locality is home to nearly 80,000 residents who currently lack basic amenities. MLA Pravin Darekar, who moved the resolution, argued that the residents should be rehabilitated on-site rather than relocated. The matter will now be taken up with the state government, the Centre, and judicial authorities.
The planning committee meeting saw the presence of suburban Mumbai Members of the Legislative Assembly, Members of Parliament, and senior government officials. Their discussions revolved around improving the quality of life for residents by addressing issues related to redevelopment, safety, tribal welfare, and environmental regulations.
This initiative marks a crucial step in addressing safety concerns linked to Mumbai’s ageing buildings. It also paves the way for faster, supported redevelopment.
