As per news reports, over 25 crore workers across India will participate in a Bharat Bandh (nationwide general strike) on Wednesday. The strike has been called by a joint platform of 10 central trade unions to protest what they describe as “anti-worker, anti-farmer, and pro-corporate policies” of the central government.

Widespread Disruptions Expected on Bharat Bandh

The strike is likely to impact several important sectors, including:

  • Banking and insurance
  • Postal services
  • Coal mining
  • Transport and state-run buses
  • Factories and public sector enterprises
  • Schools and colleges in many areas

Essential services like railways, emergency healthcare, and markets are expected to remain open. However, daily life in several parts of the country may be affected due to the scale of participation.

Who Is Behind Bharat Bandh?

The protest is being organised by major trade unions such as AITUC, CITU, INTUC, HMS, SEWA, and others. These groups have been mobilising for months and have submitted a 17-point demand list to the government.

What Are the Workers Demanding?

The workers are demanding changes in several areas, including:

  • Scrapping of the four new labour codes
  • Protection of union rights and shorter working hours
  • End to excessive contract and outsourced jobs
  • Fair wage policies and regular recruitments
  • Reduced corporate influence over public policy

The unions also criticised the government for not holding the annual labour conference for over a decade.

Support from Farmers and Rural Workers

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha and other rural workers' groups have extended their support to the strike. They plan to organise protests to highlight unemployment, high living costs, and farmer distress.

Conclusion

With lakhs of workers and farmers joining hands, the Bharat Bandh is expected to be one of the largest protests in recent years. While essential services will remain available, major disruptions in public life are likely. The strike reflects growing frustration among workers and farmers over government policies they feel are not in their favour.
