As per the Moneycontrol reports, American Chip Maker AMD is in talks with the Indian government regarding the development of indigenous graphics processing units (GPUs). This is part of India’s plan to build domestic chip capacity. The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) has been assigned to lead the GPU development, with a prototype expected by the end of 2025. The government aims for the GPUs to be commercially ready by 2030.

Possible Participation in DLI Scheme

The company has also expressed interest in the Design-Linked Incentive (DLI) scheme. The earlier version of the scheme, introduced in 2021, had a limited budget of less than $12 million and was open only to 5 selected firms. Out of nearly 60 proposals received, only 20 qualified, and a smaller number moved forward with fabrication.

A revised version of the scheme is currently being worked on and may include broader eligibility and higher incentives. AMD has said it may participate if the terms align with its business plans.

Investments and Workforce

AMD’s $400 million India investment plan is on track. The company recently opened the 2nd phase of its Bengaluru campus, which can house over 3,000 engineers. As per news reports, AMD plans to hire more than 3,000+ engineers in India by 2028. Its current workforce in the country is around 8,000. These teams are involved in several areas, including chip design for 2nm and 3nm technologies.

Involvement in AI Mission

AMD’s GPUs are being used in India’s AI compute infrastructure. As part of the national AI mission, the country has built a capacity of over 34,000 GPUs through various cloud providers, including those using AMD hardware.

Local IP and Startup

The company has also backed a few Indian startups working on chip-related technologies. It has pointed to the need for local intellectual property and a better design ecosystem to support manufacturing in the long run.

Conclusion

AMD’s India plans currently include discussions on GPU development, possible entry into the DLI scheme, expansion of R&D, and selective startup support.
