As per news reports, Amazon has initiated significant job reductions within its Amazon Web Services (AWS) division, marking another wave of layoffs as the company continues reshaping its workforce to adapt to evolving technologies. This move comes shortly after CEO Andy Jassy signalled that the growing use of generative AI would likely lead to workforce changes.
As per news reports, on Thursday, at least hundreds of employees at AWS were laid off. The layoffs come amid a broader shift in corporate strategy, as more organisations, including Amazon, embrace AI technologies to automate tasks and cut costs.
As per news reports, A spokesperson from Amazon confirmed the job cuts but declined to specify the number of roles affected. The company, which had 1.6 million full- and part-time employees globally as of March-end, joins industry peers such as Microsoft, Meta, and CrowdStrike in announcing layoffs this year.
Many companies are increasingly relying on artificial intelligence to perform tasks like software coding and other routine functions. These AI-driven initiatives are reshaping traditional roles, leading to reduced dependence on human resources. “We’ve made the difficult business decision to eliminate some roles across particular teams in AWS,” said the Amazon spokesperson in an emailed statement. “These decisions are necessary as we continue to invest, hire, and optimise resources to deliver innovation for our customers.”
Despite AWS reporting strong financial performance, with sales growing 17% year-over-year to $29.3 billion in the first quarter, and operating income rising 23% to $11.5 billion, the layoffs impacted several teams. One such group, called “specialists,” who assist clients in developing product ideas and promoting existing services, was notably affected.
As per Reuters, Many Employees received termination emails on Thursday morning, and their system access was deactivated. Amazon stated that several groups within AWS were included in this round of layoffs. The company has also been cutting roles in other divisions such as books, devices and services, and its Wondery podcast unit. CEO Jassy has emphasised the need to reduce unnecessary layers of management and streamline operations across the organisation.

Amazon’s recent AWS layoffs reflect a strategic shift driven by the rising use of generative AI and a broader aim to enhance operational efficiency. While the cloud unit continues to show robust financial growth, the company is aligning its workforce structure with emerging technological capabilities and customer needs.
