Amazon’s Counterfeit Crimes Unit (CCU), launched in 2020, has expanded its global presence from 2 to 12 countries, including the US, UK, China, France, and India. The team, composed of former law enforcement officials and data experts, has spearheaded over 200 civil cases and collaborated with global agencies like the FBI, Europol, and US Homeland Security.
These efforts have led to criminal prosecutions, including over 65 prison sentences and more than $180 million in global financial penalties against counterfeiters.
India ranks among the top 5 countries most affected by counterfeit goods, particularly in sectors like pharmaceuticals, FMCG, electronics, luxury products, and auto parts. As per news reports, the country's counterfeit market is valued between $12 billion and $30 billion annually.
Amazon’s CCU employs artificial intelligence and machine learning to proactively block over 99% of suspected fake listings before they even reach the marketplace. Tools like Brand Registry and Transparency also empower brand partners to better defend their intellectual property rights.
Amazon has collaborated with hundreds of major brands, including Prada, BMW, Lego, Canon, and Cisco, as well as small businesses like Dutch Blitz and Capri Blue. One notable case involved Pandora, where joint efforts across nine European countries led to the dismantling of a large counterfeiting ring selling fake jewellery.
In another operation, Amazon traced counterfeit ride-sharing products from the US to manufacturers in China, resulting in coordinated raids, seizure of over 2,100 fake items, and a $1.1 million court judgment.
