Amazon India has introduced a flat ₹5 charge on every order, including those placed by Prime members, as per the reports. The fee is being labelled a "marketplace fee" and has been applicable since May 2025.

Who It Applies To

The ₹5 charge applies to all orders placed on the platform, regardless of the customer’s subscription status. This includes Prime and non-Prime users alike. The amount is charged per order and is not linked to the value of the purchase.

Exemptions Listed

Some categories of purchases are excluded from the charge. These include:

  • Gift cards
  • Orders placed through Amazon Business and Bazaar
  • Purchases made on Amazon Fresh and Amazon Now
  • Digital services such as mobile recharges, bill payments, bookings, subscriptions, and app purchases

Digital products delivered via email, such as software keys or store codes, are also not covered under this fee. In cases where customers are already paying other applicable charges like processing or exchange fees, the ₹5 may be clubbed with them rather than shown separately.

Larger Industry Pattern

As per the news reports, Amazon's fee introduction follows similar steps of other online platforms. Flipkart began charging ₹3 per order in mid-2024. Quick-commerce services like Zomato-owned Blinkit, Zepto, and Swiggy Instamart have also started adding small order-level fees. These charges are now becoming a standard part of the checkout process on most major platforms.

Sales Event Activity Still High

Although Amazon doesn’t share daily order counts, past sales events show high engagement. During Prime Day 2024, over 24,000 orders were placed per minute at peak time, up from 22,190 in 2023. The Great Indian Festival, which November, saw 1.4 billion customer visits, with a large share from non-metro cities. In 2023, the figure was 1.1 billion, with around 4 million new users during the sale.

Conclusion

The flat ₹5 charge marks a shift in how e-commerce platforms in India are structuring customer orders. It is now part of a wider approach seen across the industry.
