In a strategic push to deepen its presence in the United States chemicals industry, the Aditya Birla Group has acquired Cargill Inc.’s speciality chemical manufacturing facility in Dalton, Georgia. The transaction, for an undisclosed amount, was carried out via Aditya Birla Chemicals (USA) Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Aditya Birla Chemicals (Thailand) Ltd. The deal adds to the Indian conglomerate’s growing $15 billion US portfolio, which includes Novelis and Birla Carbon.
The Dalton site, spread over 17 acres, manufactures a range of speciality chemicals such as epoxy resins and curing agents. As part of its strategy to scale operations, Aditya Birla Group’s Advanced Materials unit plans to more than double the site's current capacity from 16,000 tonnes to over 40,000 tonnes within 2 years. All 50 existing employees will be retained.
“This marks a strategic entry into the US chemicals industry and aligns with our broader commitment to support the revival of American manufacturing,” said Aditya Birla Group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla. “We see a significant opportunity to grow and modernise this facility and continue to look for other strategic assets.”
The company aims to cater to the automotive, renewable energy, and aerospace sectors, introducing proprietary technologies for recycling epoxy composites used in wind turbines, pressure vessels, and sports equipment.
With this acquisition, Aditya Birla Group reinforces its commitment to establishing a strong local manufacturing presence in the US. “Establishing a local presence enables us to serve regional customers more efficiently and co-develop tailored solutions,” said Rajesh Balakrishnan, CEO of the Advanced Materials business. “We’re excited to enhance the facility’s capabilities and expand our product offerings.”
The Group also anticipates further investment at the Dalton facility in the coming months, as it integrates advanced technologies from across its global operations. “We expect additional investment at the Dalton site in the coming months,” said Jayant Dhobley, Business Head of Chemicals, Fashion & Insulators at Aditya Birla Group.
