In a major step toward green industrial logistics, the Adani Group has deployed India’s first hydrogen-powered truck for mining operations. Flagged off in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, the truck can carry up to 40 tonnes of cargo and offers a driving range of 200 km on a single charge.
This marks a significant move by Adani Enterprises, the flagship firm of the conglomerate, to introduce low-emission transport solutions in the mining sector. The initiative is being developed in collaboration with both Indian and global energy technology companies as well as a leading automobile manufacturer.
“These hydrogen-powered trucks will gradually replace diesel vehicles used in our logistics operations,” said Adani Enterprises in a statement.

Integrated with smart technology
The first truck will be used to transport coal from the Gare Pelma III coal block to a Chhattisgarh State Power Generation Company Limited power plant. Adani Enterprises serves as the mine developer and operator for this block, appointed through a competitive bidding process.
This initiative is part of Adani Group’s broader decarbonisation and sustainability strategy. The company is also implementing:
Semi-autonomous dozer push technology
Solar-powered mining systems
Tree transplanters for ecological conservation
Digital innovation for efficient mining
The hydrogen cells powering the trucks are being supplied by Adani New Industries Limited (ANIL), another arm of the conglomerate. ANIL is also involved in manufacturing green hydrogen, wind turbines, solar modules, and battery systems.
“We are committed to responsible mining. Our goal is to create model mines with minimal environmental impact while ensuring affordable electricity for all,” said Vinay Prakash, CEO – Natural Resources and Director, Adani Enterprises.
Hydrogen fuel is considered a clean energy source, emitting only water vapour and warm air during use. It matches diesel in load capacity and range but drastically reduces pollution and noise, which is crucial in the mining industry where diesel remains the dominant fuel.
The switch from diesel to hydrogen will not only cut emissions but also help reduce India’s oil import dependency and promote energy security.
