On March 5, 2026, India and Finland formally elevated their bilateral relations to a strategic partnership.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finnish President Alexander Stubb cemented this alliance through a series of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at boosting cooperation in areas like digitalisation, clean energy, and sustainability.
During their meeting at Hyderabad House, PM Modi and President Stubb highlighted their countries' ambitions to enhance collaboration in technology and sustainability.
They outlined plans to work together on next-generation 6G networks, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, quantum computing, and renewable energy solutions. Both leaders expressed confidence that these efforts would also foster stronger ties in defence and space exploration.
A notable feature of their engagement is the existing cooperation between Indian enterprises and Finnish firms, such as Nokia, which has significantly boosted connectivity across India with its mobile and network technologies.
Additionally, Finnish expertise has contributed to infrastructural advancements like the world's tallest railway bridge over the Chenab River.
An essential part of the India–Finland dialogue included discussions on the historic India–European Union Free Trade Agreement, signed at the start of 2026.
This accord is expected to enhance trade, technology, and investment ties between India and Finland.
Modi remarked on the global challenges posed by ongoing conflicts, from Ukraine to West Asia, and emphasised the importance of democratic alliances.
He underlined that such partnerships are vital in maintaining resilient global supply chains and technology ecosystems.
