India’s telecom sector continued to evolve in April 2025, with Reliance Jio taking a clear lead in subscriber additions. The latest report by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) shows mixed performance across major operators, with Jio expanding its reach, Airtel growing moderately, and Vodafone Idea and BSNL struggling to hold on to their user base.

Reliance Jio Gains Big

Reliance Jio recorded a major win in April by adding 26.4 lakh mobile subscribers, a significant rise from the 21.7 lakh added in March. This strong performance further strengthens its leadership in the Indian telecom space. With a total broadband subscriber base of over 476 million, Jio continues to dominate both the mobile and broadband segments.

In the wired broadband category too, Jio stood on top with 11.48 million subscribers, reflecting consistent growth across all fronts.

Bharti Airtel Sees Slower Growth

Bharti Airtel added 1.71 lakh subscribers in April, a noticeable dip from the 12.5 lakh additions seen in March. While the pace slowed down, Airtel remains a strong contender in both mobile and broadband services. It holds over 289 million broadband users and ranks second in the wired broadband space with 8.55 million subscribers.

Although growth was slower, Bharti Airtel's share price edged up by a modest ₹7.50 to reach ₹1,863.60 on Thursday, May 29, 2025.

Vodafone Idea Faces Continued Decline

Vodafone Idea continues to face tough times. In April, it lost 6.47 lakh mobile users, a sharper fall compared to the 5.4 lakh users lost in March. Its total broadband subscriber base stood at 125.63 million, but growing market pressure and lagging investments seem to be affecting user retention.

Vodafone Idea's share price saw minimal change on Thursday, May 29, 2025, holding steady at ₹7.14 on the NSE with a slight uptick of just 0.28%.

BSNL Slides Further

BSNL also recorded a subscriber loss of 1.55 lakh in April, reversing its minor gain of 49,177 users in March. In the wired broadband segment, BSNL ranks third with 4.32 million subscribers, but its overall competitiveness continues to weaken due to operational challenges.

India’s total wireless user base rose from 1,163.76 million in March to 1,166.43 million in April, a growth of 0.23%. Rural areas saw better growth (0.37%) than urban areas (0.11%), pointing to deeper digital penetration in the countryside. Tele-density improved marginally to 82.54%, with rural tele-density increasing to 58.87%.

Conclusion

April 2025 paints a clear picture of the ongoing competition in India’s telecom space. Reliance Jio leads with confidence, Airtel continues steady progress, and Vodafone Idea and BSNL struggle to retain ground. With digital demand rising, the coming months will be crucial for all players aiming to capture India’s vast and growing telecom market.
