What is BSE IPO?

BSE IPO is a strategy index on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) which captures the performance of a select group of companies after they have been listed on BSE, i.e., post completion of their initial public offering, over a one-year period. It is the only index in India that deals with newly listed IPO companies’ performance.

The S&P BSE IPO index is a diversified index of 54 stocks that span 14 sectors, including Finance, FMCG, Healthcare, Chemical & Petrochemical, Transport Services, Tourism, Transport Equipment, Housing Related, IT, Capital Goods, Consumer Durables, Agriculture, Textile, and Metal, Metal Products & Mining.

This S&P BSE IPO index was launched on August 24, 2009, with the first value date as May 3, 2004, and with base value at 1000. Since its inception, the S&P BSE IPO share price has breached the levels of 9,000 at ~102.36x P/E multiples.

The index value is calculated based on a modified market-cap-weighted method on a real-time basis. It is rebalanced every month, with each constituent stock capped at 20%.

S&P BSE IPO index is managed and governed by S&P BSE Index Committee set up under Asia Index Private Ltd, which is a joint venture of S&P and BSE Ltd. The BSE IPO index is calculated in two currencies: INR and USD; for USD, spot foreign exchange rates are applied from Refinitiv’s data. It has an index variant in both the currencies, named S&P BSE IPO TR.

How is BSE IPO calculated? How are stocks selected for inclusion in the BSE IPO?

The BSE IPO share price is computed by weighting its 54 stocks based on float-adjusted capped market capitalization, using the divisor methodology of the S&P Dow Jones equity indices.

The securities must fulfil the following eligibility criteria to be included in the BSE IPO index:

  1. Should be domiciled in India and listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange.
  2. Should have a minimum free float market capitalization value of INR 1 billion (100 crores) on their first day of listing in order to be a part of the eligible universe.
  3. In order to be included, the constituent stock should have a minimum free float market capitalization value of INR 1 billion (100 crores) on its third day of listing.
  4. Should be excluded from the index after being listed for one year.
  5. Should have a minimum number of 10 stocks at all times; in case there is a shortfall, the company stock’s exclusion is delayed till a new eligible stock can be found.
  6. Should only include common stocks of the IPO companies.
  7. Follow-on public issues are ineligible for inclusion in the index.

The index value is calculated as follows –

Index value = Index Market Value / Divisor

Where,

Index Market Value = Price * Shares * IWF (Float Factor) * AWF

AWF = Additional weight factor to maintain stock weight constraints

Divisor after rebalancing = Market Value after rebalancing/ Index Value before rebalancing

The BSE IPO index is reconstituted every month, which becomes effective on the Monday that follows the third Friday of each month.
