On May 9, 2024, Infosys informed the stock exchanges that the company, in collaboration with Alliance for an Energy-Efficient Economy (AEEE) and the Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS) launched a program called ASSURE (Accelerating Sustainable and Super-efficient Real Estate).

ASSURE aims to decarbonise the country’s commercial building sector and cement its global leadership in climate action and sustainability. The program seeks to realise 100 million sq. ft. of high-performance commercial buildings in India by 2030.

ASSURE is designed as the largest organised effort in the world to implement high-performance buildings at scale. It brings innovators, experts, and the government together and strives to offer technical support to lighthouse projects, enhance ecosystem capacity, and showcase feasibility, drawing from Infosys’ campus experiences. Additionally, ASSURE will help promote entrepreneurship, team with government agencies to develop a supportive policy environment, and associate with big financial institutions to execute high-performance commercial buildings.

The company stated that Infosys is an early adopter of ESG goals and has supported responsible businesses over the years. In 2020, Infosys became carbon neutral, 30 years ahead of the timeline set by the Paris Agreement.

Speaking of this initiative, the Co-founder and Chairman of Infosys, Nandan Nilekani, said, “India’s building sector presents a significant opportunity to make progress on our nation’s sustainability goals. We are delighted to collaborate with AEEE and IIHS, and to amplify the potential of their nationwide community of industry leaders, practitioners, knowledge institutions, and students to drive positive climate action. ASSURE – our joint program – creates the next opportunity to make a significant impact on India’s environmental footprint, paving the way for a greener and more sustainable future for generations to come.”

The President & Executive Director of AEEE, Dr Satish Kumar, said, “Today, we launch ASSURE not just to meet global standards but to set new ones. By integrating rigorous performance validation and ambitious emissions reduction targets, we aim to transform building practices and drive real change. Together, let’s harness our collective expertise to not only reach but exceed these benchmarks, proving that a sustainable future is not only possible but inevitable.”

Aromar Revi, the Director of IIHS, stated that their assistance to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) AR6 cycle, particularly the 1.5C Special Report and the Summary for Urban Policymakers, underscores the importance of urban and infrastructure system transitions and building energy efficiency measures. This aligns with the deep emission reduction objectives of the Paris Climate Agreement. IIHS is excited about this partnership with Infosys and AEEE in preparing actionable solutions that build on their impactful work on climate science, policy, finance, capacity development, and innovation.
