The flagship of the Chokhani group, Chokhani International is engaged in ship repairs and dry docking. Its modern and sophisticated ship repair facilities reduce the number of dry docking days required and afford the ship owner more flexibility in vessel utilisation. The company set up the first modern sophisticated ship repair complex in India at Madras Port, in technical collaboration with Keppel Corporation, Singapore. The complex has two floating dry docks with lifting capacities of 14,000 tonnes and 2400 tonnes capable of servicing vessels upto 40,000 dwt. It mobilised funds for this project through a public issue in Feb.'89. The project faced cost overruns, as exchange fluctuations increased the cost of imported dry docks and other imported capital equipment. In 1991-92, in order to establish ship-repair facilities at Calcutta, the company promoted Chokhani Shipyard (Bengal). The company's collaboration with Keppel Corporation, Singapore, expired in Oct.'94. In 1994, its shipyard at Madras undertook the repair of tanker vessels for the first time.
