Zomato has revised its policy for Gold subscription members by introducing a 'rain fee' on deliveries made during inclement weather.
Effective May 16, even premium subscribers will be charged this fee, which was earlier waived for them. The rain surcharge, typically ranging between ₹10 and ₹35, will now be applicable to all users during rainy conditions.
Zomato stated in an in-app notification that the additional charges are aimed at providing better compensation to its delivery partners who operate under challenging weather circumstances. In addition to the rain fee, the company also continues to charge a ₹10 platform fee on every order placed through its app.
Zomato’s move aligns with the industry norm, as several food tech and quick commerce platforms already apply surcharges for rain-affected deliveries. However, the decision to withdraw this benefit from paying Gold users has sparked some discontent, especially as premium subscriptions were previously promoted as a way to access exclusive perks, including waived delivery surcharges.
In its Q4 results, Zomato’s parent company Eternal reported a 78% year-on-year drop in net profit to ₹39 crore, primarily due to mounting losses in its quick commerce arm, Blinkit. Although operating revenue grew 64% YoY to ₹5,833 crore, driven largely by Blinkit, operating losses for the quick commerce segment surged 75% sequentially to ₹178 crore.
On May 16, 2025, Eternal (Zomato) share price opened at ₹242.60, almost the same as its previous close of ₹242.59. At 9:59 AM, the share price of Eternal was trading at ₹245.46, up by 1.18% on the NSE.

As Zomato grapples with growing costs and changing consumer behavior, its latest changes to the Gold subscription plan reflect a shift toward sustainability and operational efficiency. However, as Blinkit's expansion impacts profitability and food delivery growth slows, the company must balance customer experience with financial performance moving forward.
