Taxpayers are unknowingly becoming part of GST scam worth crores because their PAN and Aadhaar were misused. If you’ve ever shared these sensitive documents without caution, it’s time to verify whether your identity is at the risk of being misused.

Fraudulent GST Transactions Detected During ITR Filing

As per media reports, a tax professional discovered suspicious GST sales and purchase transactions worth ₹7 crore in the Annual Information Statement (AIS) while filing income tax returns (ITR) for a client. Upon investigation, it was found that someone had fraudulently registered a GST number using the client’s PAN and carried out high-value transactions without their knowledge.

The misuse happened because the individual had shared their PAN and Aadhaar copies with several banks during loan applications, providing an opportunity for scammers to exploit the documents.

How to Check for PAN Misuse via Income Tax Portal?

To find out if your PAN has been misused for GST or other fraudulent activities, you can follow these simple steps:

  1. Log in to the Income Tax Portal using your credentials.
  2. Go to the AIS (Annual Information Statement) section.
  3. Under “Other Information,” look for any unknown GST registrations or unfamiliar transactions.
  4. If you identify any discrepancies, submit feedback and choose the option “Information is denied” to report the misuse.
