The United States (US) and the United Kingdom (UK) have officially signed a trade agreement, as announced by U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday evening, Indian time. However, the details of the agreement remain vague, and the final terms are still under negotiation.

Key Provisions of the US-UK Trade Deal

  • One of the key provisions outlined in the broad framework of the deal is the continuation of a 10% blanket tariff on all UK imports.
  • For the automobile sector, the agreement stipulates that imports of up to 1,00,000 vehicles will be subject to a 10% tariff, while any additional vehicles will still incur the existing 25% tariff currently applied to all auto imports.
  • Before the imposition of the 25% tariff on April 2, the standard U.S. import duty on passenger vehicles was just 2.5%. Despite this increase, the new 10% tariff is still lower than the previously imposed 25%. However, it still represents a notable rise from the former 2.5% rate.
  • Additionally, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), a subsidiary of Tata Motors, had halted shipments to the U.S. in April, making the impact of the tariff change particularly relevant for the company. JLR had shipped 102,000 vehicles to the U.S. in 2024, according to official figures.
