The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is taking urgent steps to enhance the efficiency and credibility of the FASTag-based toll collection system. The authority has directed toll agencies and concessionaires to immediately identify and report loose FASTags, also known as ‘tag-in-hand’, to ensure prompt blacklisting.

This move comes ahead of the annual pass system rollout on August 15 and the introduction of multi-lane free-flow tolling technology.

Immediate Blacklisting of Loose FASTags

NHAI has formalised a policy requiring toll operators to promptly notify instances of loose FASTags. These tags, when not fixed to vehicles, undermine the validity of electronic toll records and disrupt automated systems. To address this, NHAI has created a dedicated email ID for fast communication and response. The aim is to maintain 98% FASTag penetration momentum and ensure seamless toll operations across the national highway network.

Annual Pass Launch and MLFF Rollout

NHAI's focus on strengthening FASTag enforcement aligns with the upcoming launch of a yearly pass system on August 15. The pass is expected to streamline fee payments and reduce transaction time for regular highway users. Furthermore, the government is preparing to execute multi-lane free flow (MLFF) tolling, which will allow vehicles to move at highway speeds through toll plazas, relying entirely on vehicle tagging and automated tracking.

Impact on Users and Tolling Agencies

Users carrying FASTags in hand rather than affixing them to the windscreen will face blacklisting, leading to delayed passage or penalties. Tolling agencies have been tasked with rigorous enforcement and must report incidents in real time. With electronic monitoring tightening across highways, violations using unauthentic FASTags are expected to drop considerably.

Conclusion

NHAI’s crackdown on loose FASTags is a key step toward enhancing the integrity of India’s digital tolling system. With the annual pass and MLFF technologies on the horizon, these measures are set to reinforce compliance, reduce fraud, and improve user experience on national highways.
