In a festive gesture ahead of Diwali, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced financial benefits for Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) employees.
The decision includes an ex-gratia grant, a Diwali advance, and a monthly salary increment support from the government to improve employee welfare and strengthen the corporation’s operations.
Approximately 85,000 MSRTC staff members will receive ₹6,000 each as an ex-gratia Diwali gift. In addition, the government will provide ₹65 crore every month to the corporation to meet salary increment obligations.
Eligible employees will also receive ₹12,500 as a Diwali advance. These initiatives aim to ensure timely financial relief and recognise the contribution of MSRTC workers during the festive season.
Officials stated that while the festive bonuses are being distributed, steps are also being taken to make MSRTC financially self-sufficient. Plans are underway to increase the corporation’s revenue through asset development on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. By utilising its land and infrastructure more efficiently, MSRTC aims to create additional income streams to support future salary and operational needs.

The announcement came after the MSRTC employees’ union threatened to initiate large-scale protests over salary delays and pending increments. Following the government’s assurance, the agitation has been temporarily deferred. The financial package is expected to provide short-term relief to employees while also laying the groundwork for sustainable fiscal reform within the corporation.
The Maharashtra government’s Diwali package for MSRTC employees reflects both festive goodwill and a strategic step towards long-term stability in the state’s transport sector. With ₹6,000 bonuses, ₹12,500 advances, and ₹65 crore monthly salary support, the initiative seeks to boost morale and ensure financial consistency for thousands of state transport workers.
