Amazon Web Services (AWS) has struck a landmark $38 billion deal with OpenAI, marking one of the largest-ever AI infrastructure collaborations. The seven-year agreement underscores Amazon’s renewed push to cement its place in the generative AI ecosystem.
Under the multi-year pact, AWS will deliver hundreds of thousands of Nvidia GPUs, including GB200 and GB300 AI accelerators, across its advanced cloud clusters to support OpenAI’s growing compute needs. The collaboration aims to supply the enormous processing capacity required to train and run ChatGPT and other large language models, with full deployment expected by the end of 2026.
The partnership comes at a time when OpenAI’s infrastructure spending has reached staggering levels, over $1.4 trillion earmarked for building and scaling its AI operations globally. For Amazon, the deal is a powerful validation of its ability to build and manage high-performance data centres at scale.
The agreement marks OpenAI’s diversification away from its earlier exclusive reliance on Microsoft Azure, even as other cloud leaders compete for a share of the AI infrastructure surge. Microsoft has pledged around $250 billion in cloud commitments, while Oracle’s $300 billion and CoreWeave’s $22.4 billion partnerships further reflect the scale of investment sweeping through the sector.
With this move, AWS joins the elite circle of hyperscale providers fuelling the AI revolution, signalling a turning point in the race to support frontier AI systems.

The Amazon–OpenAI partnership marks a defining moment in the evolution of cloud computing. As hyperscalers race to build the digital backbone of artificial intelligence, AWS’s massive bet on compute infrastructure signals that the era of trillion-dollar AI investments has well and truly begun.
