On July 2, 2025, the Department of Posts announced that Registered Post will be merged with Speed Post, starting September 1, 2025. This decision aims to simplify postal services and offer faster, more efficient, and secure deliveries for customers.

Why Is Registered Post Being Merged?

According to a circular issued by India Post on July 2, 2025, the merger is part of a plan to consolidate similar services. The main reasons behind this move are:

  • To simplify the delivery system
  • Improve tracking and speed
  • Increase operational efficiency
  • Meet changing customer needs

What Were the Differences Between Registered Post and Speed Post?

Here’s a simple comparison between the two services:

FeatureRegistered PostSpeed Post
PurposeSecure delivery with verificationFast and time-bound delivery
DeliveryOnly to the addresseeAnyone at the address can receive
SpeedSlowerFast
CostLowerSlightly higher
TrackingAvailableReal-time tracking available

Why Is Registered Post Declining?

Over the last decade, Registered Post usage has dropped sharply due to:

  • Increase in digital communication
  • Preference for faster services
  • Growth in mobile apps and private couriers

In 2011-12, India Post dispatched around 24.4 crore registered items, but by 2019-20, this number had dropped to 18.4 crore. This marks a decline of nearly 25% over the decade. Notably, this downward trend occurred even before the COVID-19 pandemic, which further accelerated the shift towards digital communication and faster delivery alternatives.

What Happens to Secure Deliveries Now?

The Department of Posts clarified that secure delivery will not end. Instead, the "registration" feature will now be part of Speed Post.

For example:

  • A ₹2.50 inland letter with registration will now cost ₹19.50.
  • A ₹5 letter will cost ₹22 with registration.

This ensures that legal, financial, or government documents can still be sent securely.

Benefits of the Merger

Here’s how the merger will benefit users:

  • Simplified Services: Easier choices with fewer overlapping services
  • Better Tracking: Real-time updates even for secure deliveries
  • Faster Turnaround: Improved efficiency in delivery
  • One-stop Solution: Speed and security in one service

Conclusion

Though many may feel nostalgic about Registered Post, this merger shows India Post’s effort to modernise and meet current customer needs. With secure delivery now a part of the faster and better-tracked Speed Post, users can expect improved convenience and efficiency moving forward.
