India has marked a significant milestone in its defence capabilities by successfully testing the Agni-Prime intermediate-range missile from a rail-based mobile launcher. The development enhances India’s strategic deterrence with improved mobility, quick deployment, and reduced detection risk.
On September 25, 2025, India test-fired its Agni-Prime missile, capable of striking targets up to 2,000 km, from a specially developed rail-based mobile launcher. This marks the first test of its kind for the Agni-Prime missile on a rail platform. The system, designed for rapid deployment, offers low visibility and can traverse India's extensive railway network without restriction.
The Agni-Prime combines range, precision, and mobility, reinforcing India’s nuclear deterrent posture. As a canisterised system, it allows for launch from any desired location and significantly reduces preparation time. With a versatile strike range, Agni-Prime adds reliability and operational flexibility to India's arsenal.
The test was jointly conducted by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Strategic Forces Command (SFC). Defence Minister Rajnath Singh applauded the contribution of both teams, noting that the successful test places India among a limited number of nations possessing such rail-based launch systems.

Unlike traditional road-mobile systems, a rail-based launcher offers stealth and agility. Navigating India's extensive rail network makes detection and tracking significantly harder for adversaries. The configuration lends itself to fast response during high-tension situations, enabling strategic superiority.
The successful testing of the Agni-Prime from a rail-based mobile launcher represents a considerable leap in India's defence mobility and strike readiness. With enhanced range, stealth, and rapid deployment ability, India strengthens its deterrence capacity and operational capabilities.
