The government has rolled out fresh directives to ensure that consumers directly experience and recognize the benefits of the revised Goods and Services Tax (GST) framework. Effective September 22, 2025, prices of nearly 400 products will drop following the move to a simplified two slab GST structure.
According to the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), major retail chains must prominently display GST related discounts on customer receipts under the heading “GST Discount.”
Retailers have also been instructed to use posters, flyers, and advertisements across print, television, and digital platforms to highlight the price cuts.
Officials emphasised that the visibility of these discounts is crucial, not just at billing counters but also across promotional campaigns. This is aimed at ensuring customers associate the lower bills directly with the government’s tax reforms.
The directive comes just ahead of the festive season, beginning with Navaratri on September 22. Authorities believe the timing will amplify the impact, boosting consumer demand and sales.
Retailers have been advised to track sales volumes during this period and share data publicly to showcase the benefits of the GST overhaul.

The reform simplifies the earlier four-slab system into just two:
The 12% and 28% brackets will be scrapped. Everyday staples such as food and groceries will now attract just 5% GST, while essentials like bread, milk, and paneer will be entirely exempt. Items ranging from soaps and shampoos to cars, tractors, and air conditioners are also part of the reduced GST list.
For customers, the shift means cheaper household essentials and big-ticket purchases alike. By mandating that sellers visibly display the GST discount, the government is not only ensuring compliance but also signalling its intent to strengthen trust between retailers and consumers.

The GST reform aims to bring simplicity to India’s tax system while boosting consumer confidence through visible price reductions. As the festive season begins, both retailers and buyers will be watching closely to see how effectively these changes translate into savings at the checkout counter.
