New government figures reveal stark contrasts in state-level economic progress, with southern states like Telangana and Tamil Nadu doubling per capita incomes between FY15 and FY25, while northern counterparts such as Uttarakhand, Punjab, and Rajasthan show sluggish growth over the same period.
India’s overall per capita net income at constant prices has grown by about 57.5%, rising from ₹72,805 in FY15 to ₹1,14,710 in FY25. However, performance varies sharply across states. Uttarakhand experienced the lowest growth, at only 33.5%. Punjab and Rajasthan followed with 41.3% and 49.8% respectively.
In contrast, Odisha saw a sharp increase of 96.7%, and Karnataka jumped by 93.6%. Telangana and Tamil Nadu also stood out, with per capita income growing by 85.3% and 83.3% respectively.
Higher growth in per capita income in southern and eastern regions can be linked to stronger industrial expansion, better infrastructure, and targeted economic policies. These regions have focused on technology, manufacturing, and service-driven growth which has directly reflected in income levels.
States like West Bengal (51.8%) and Maharashtra (53.6%) have shown only modest improvement. Large states such as Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have not published FY25 figures, but FY24 data show UP at ₹50,341, reflecting a 47.9% increase since FY14. Factors like administrative efficiency, quality of education and healthcare, and scale of investment contribute to these disparities.

India’s nominal GDP has soared from ₹106.57 lakh crore in FY15 to ₹331.03 lakh crore in FY25. Per capita income rose sharply from ₹86,647 in 2015 to ₹2,40,000 in 2025, marking a robust 188% increase. This progress confirms India’s place as the fastest-growing major economy with real GDP expanding at 6.5%.
The data underscores a notable regional divergence in economic progress. While southern states surge ahead in income growth, several northern and central states lag, highlighting the need for stronger, inclusive development strategies to balance regional inequalities.
