India’s maritime capabilities have taken a major leap forward with the delivery of ‘Nistar’, to the Indian Navy. Delivered on July 8, 2025, at Visakhapatnam by Hindustan Shipyard Limited, this vessel reflects India’s growing focus on self-reliance and technological advancement in defence shipbuilding.
‘Nistar’, the country’s first indigenously designed and built Diving Support Vessel (DSV), to the Indian Navy.
The Diving Support Vessel (DSV) ‘Nistar’ represents a significant achievement for Indian shipbuilding. Designed and constructed entirely within the country, the ship adheres to the classification rules of the Indian Register of Shipping. This achievement underscores India’s strategic intent to enhance indigenous capabilities in complex maritime systems.
‘Nistar’ is a highly specialised warship designed to execute deep-sea diving and rescue operations. This capability is possessed by only a handful of navies across the globe. The vessel can undertake saturation diving up to 300 metres and is also equipped with a side diving stage that supports operations up to 75 metres. These features make it a critical asset in supporting the Indian Navy’s underwater missions.
Equipped with modern diving systems and a combination of Remotely Operated Vehicles, the ship can conduct diver monitoring and salvage operations up to a depth of 1000 metres. These capabilities extend the Navy’s reach in submarine rescue and underwater logistics, positioning ‘Nistar’ as a major force multiplier for specialised missions.
Beyond diving support, ‘Nistar’ will serve as the mother ship for the Deep Submergence Rescue Vessel (DSRV). In the event of an emergency involving a submarine underwater, it will enable swift rescue and evacuation of personnel. This adds a crucial layer to India’s underwater emergency response capabilities.

With nearly 75% indigenous content, ‘Nistar’ is a shining example of India’s push towards self-reliance in defence production. This milestone aligns closely with the Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives, showcasing the country’s capacity to develop and deliver sophisticated naval assets within its borders.
The ship’s name, ‘Nistar’, comes from Sanskrit, signifying liberation, rescue or salvation, a fitting representation of its life-saving purpose and mission at sea. At 118 metres in length and nearly 10,000 tonnes in displacement, the ship stands as a testament to Indian naval engineering.
