A cyberattack on Tata Motors Owned Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) in August has caused an estimated £1.9 billion ($2.55 billion) loss to the UK economy, according to a report by the Cyber Monitoring Centre (CMC).

The attack disrupted operations for over 5,000 organisations, including JLR’s suppliers and dealerships. The CMC described it as one of the most financially damaging cyber incidents in the country so far.

Disruption to Manufacturing

The hack forced JLR to halt production for nearly 6 weeks, affecting its three UK factories, which usually produce about 1,000 vehicles per day. The report said the main financial loss came from the drop in manufacturing output at JLR and its suppliers. The company has begun limited production but is not yet back to full capacity.

Government Loan and Financial Strain

During the shutdown, JLR was estimated to be losing around £50 million per week. In late September, the British government approved a £1.5 billion loan guarantee to help the company manage supplier payments and stabilise operations.

JLR employs around 34,000 people in the UK, and another 120,000 jobs are linked to its supply network, many of which were affected by the production halt.

Broader Impact and Classification

The Cyber Monitoring Centre, a non-profit group supported by the insurance industry, ranked the JLR hack as a Category 3 systemic event on a five-level scale. The report said the disruption extended beyond JLR’s facilities, impacting downstream businesses such as logistics providers and dealerships. Losses could rise if production restoration faces delays.

Recovery and Outlook

JLR started partial production in early October, but a complete recovery may not occur until January 2026, according to the CMC. The report also noted that the attack is part of a series of cyber incidents affecting major British companies this year. Earlier, Marks & Spencer suffered a breach that cost it around £300 million.

Conclusion

JLR is expected to announce its financial results in November, providing a clearer picture of the overall impact of the August cyberattack.
