South Korea’s KOSPI index has been on a record-breaking run in 2025. It has risen 71% so far this year, marking its best performance since 1999. The rally has made it the top-performing Asian market, but growing volatility signals that investors are becoming increasingly cautious.
Much of the market’s rise has been powered by large-cap technology stocks. The KOSPI 200 index, a key benchmark for institutional and passive funds, has surged 83% in 2025, mainly led by Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.
SK Hynix share price has more than tripled this year, while Samsung Electronics has also seen strong gains, benefiting from the global AI boom. However, this narrow leadership means that the rally is concentrated in only a few stocks, raising questions about the market’s overall strength.
| Index / Stock | YTD Gain (2025) |
| KOSPI | +71% |
| KOSPI 200 | +83% |
| SK Hynix | 3× increase |
| Samsung Electronics | Strong double-digit gain |
The KOSPI 200 Volatility Index (VKOSPI), which tracks expected market swings, has climbed near 40, the highest level since the trade war tensions of 2018. This indicates growing nervousness among investors despite the strong rally.
The spread between VKOSPI and Wall Street’s Cboe VIX has also reached its widest level since 2004, showing that South Korea’s market risk is rising faster than that of the US.
This spike in volatility reflects uncertainty about whether the market can sustain its current pace of growth.
Both bullish and bearish traders are paying more to hedge against large price moves. The one-month implied volatility for call options betting on another 10% gain in the KOSPI 200 has jumped above its one-year average.
Meanwhile, global factors are adding pressure. Last week’s AI-led sell-off across world markets triggered a sharp pullback in South Korea, with foreign investors selling over $1 billion worth of futures. Though the index has recovered some losses, it still remains 3% below its November 3 peak.

The KOSPI’s record-breaking rally has brought strong returns but also increased uncertainty. Rising volatility, a narrow tech-led surge, and foreign outflows suggest the market may be entering a more fragile phase.
While South Korea remains one of Asia’s standout markets for 2025, investors may need to stay cautious, as signs of fatigue and heightened volatility could test the strength of this remarkable run.
