QatarEnergy has entered into a 17-year sales and purchase agreement (SPA) with Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation (GSPC) to supply up to 1 million tonnes (MT) of liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually. The deliveries are expected to begin in 2026 and will be shipped to multiple LNG terminals across India.

Agreement Details

The agreement outlines a long-term supply arrangement between the two entities. Under the deal, LNG cargoes will be delivered to India through existing and upcoming terminals. This contract marks the second long-term LNG deal between QatarEnergy and GSPC, following an earlier agreement signed in 2019.

QatarEnergy’s Statement

Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs and President & CEO of QatarEnergy, Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, said the company is extending its existing partnership with GSPC through this new deal. He mentioned that the agreement is aimed at continuing LNG supplies to meet India’s rising demand for natural gas.

India’s LNG Infrastructure Plans

India currently operates 8 LNG import terminals with a combined capacity of about 52.7 MT per year. The country plans to increase this capacity by roughly 27% by 2030 by adding two new terminals. The expansion aligns with India’s strategy to raise the share of natural gas in its energy consumption and support industrial and transport use.

LNG Usage & Network Expansion

The government has been focusing on expanding LNG use in the transport sector. Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri recently said the number of LNG dispensing stations is expected to rise from 13 to 49 by December 2025, with a goal of reaching 1,000 stations in the coming years.

Conclusion

The new LNG supply agreement between QatarEnergy and GSPC builds on an existing relationship and provides a long-term framework for meeting India’s energy requirements through consistent natural gas imports.
